📂🚫 Data leak: high-res passport scans stolen from multiple Italian hotels!!!
🛂 What to do if you stayed in Italy this summer?

Between June and August 2025, cybercriminals offered for sale on dark-web forums tens of thousands of HD scans of passports and ID cards stolen from hotels in Italy. The Italian Digital Agency (AgID/CERT-AgID) issued an official alert; the Garante (Italian data protection authority) asked establishments to notify and secure the affected systems.

❗️Who might be affected?
Travelers who checked in at Italian hotels (where IDs are scanned at registration).
Estimates suggest 70,000 to ~100,000 documents may be affected.

🚨 What are the risks?
Identity theft, creation of forged documents, banking fraud, and targeted phishing (emails or calls referencing your stay/hotel).

🔀 What to do now

·       Monitor your accounts (bank, email) and enable alerts / two-factor authentication. Be wary of messages that mention your stay/hotel.

·       If in doubt, exercise your right of access to find out whether your document is affected; ask about retention periods and the deletion of non-essential scans. (The Garante reminded hotels of their notification and security obligations.)
